A personal favorite from Walden

I perceive that, when an acorn and a chestnut fall side by side, the one does not remain inert to make way for the other, but both obey their own laws, and spring and grow and flourish as best they can, till one, perchance, overshadows and destroys the other.

I find myself thinking about this when I hear news of firms cutting research budgets. Research is meant to grow a firm’s understanding of the consumer, and failing to do so puts these firms at a distinct disadvantage to those who continue to conduct research and develop that understanding. I wonder who emerges the winner when the upside of this economic cycle finally comes around?
